What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy brings family members together in a safe, supportive space to work through difficulties and strengthen relationships. It’s not about pointing fingers or assigning blame.

Instead, family therapy is about understanding each other better, improving communication, and finding ways forward that work for everyone.

Sessions typically involve whoever’s affected by the issue you’re facing. That might be parents and children, siblings, or extended family members. And when we say family, we mean it broadly. Whether you’re a traditional nuclear family, a blended family, single parent household, or any other family structure, family therapy is for you.

Unlike individual counselling, which focuses on one person’s experience, family therapy looks at how family members interact with each other. Your family therapist helps everyone understand different perspectives, spot unhelpful patterns, and develop new ways of relating that bring you closer together.

When Family Therapy Can Help

Every family faces challenges. Family therapy provides a safe space to work through difficulties together and build stronger relationships.

Communication Breakdowns

Family therapy can help when conversations turn into arguments, when you feel unheard, or when family members have stopped talking altogether. Family therapy helps you learn to communicate in ways that actually work.

Family Transitions

Big changes affect the whole family. Whether you’re navigating divorce, separation, becoming a blended family, welcoming a new baby, or adjusting to teenagers becoming adults, family therapy supports you through the adjustment.

Behavioural Challenges

When a child or teenager is struggling with their behaviour, it impacts everyone. Family therapy looks beyond the behaviour to understand what’s driving it and helps the whole family respond in helpful ways.

Mental Health Concerns

Anxiety, depression, eating disorders, or self-harm don’t just affect the individual. Family therapy helps families understand mental health challenges and support their loved ones effectively.

Grief and Loss

Bereavement affects every family member differently. Family therapy provides space to share your grief, support each other, and navigate loss together.

Relationship Conflicts

Conflict is a common aspect of relationships. Sibling rivalry, parent-child tension, disagreements between partners about parenting – whatever the conflict, family therapy helps you work through it constructively.

How Family Therapy Works at Now You’re Talking

We’ve designed our family therapy service around what families actually need: choice, flexibility, and support when you need it, not months down the line.

Choose Your Own Family Therapist

Browse profiles of our qualified family therapists and pick the person who feels right for your family.

You can see their specialisms, approach, and a bit about their personality before you book.

Not sure who to choose? Book a free 15-minute connection call with any therapist to ask questions and get a feel for whether they’re the right fit.

You’re in control of who you work with, which makes a real difference to how comfortable everyone feels opening up.

Flexible Family Therapy Sessions

Life’s busy enough without rigid appointment times. We offer online, in-person, and hybrid sessions that fit around your family’s schedule and preferences. Whether that’s evenings after work, weekends, or daytime sessions, we can work around you.

No Waiting Lists

When your family needs support, you need it now, not in three months’ time. We provide immediate access to qualified family therapists when you need them most.

Safe, Confidential Space

Everything shared in family therapy sessions stays confidential. Your therapist creates an environment where every family member feels safe to speak openly, without judgement.

Evidence-Based Approaches

Our counsellors use proven therapeutic approaches tailored to your family’s unique situation and needs. They’ll explain their methods in plain English and adjust their approach based on what’s working for you.

Therapy for Good

Now You’re Talking is a profit-for-purpose business. That means 66% of our profits goes back into our parent charity, TLC: Talk, Listen, Change. We fund essential services for families affected by domestic abuse, relationship breakdown, and mental health challenges across the UK.

When you choose us for your family therapy, you’re not just investing in your own family’s wellbeing. You’re helping other families access the support they desperately need.

Our Family Therapy Specialists

All our family therapists are fully qualified and registered with professional bodies. They undergo rigorous verification of their qualifications, memberships, DBS checks, and insurance.

They bring specialist knowledge in areas like systemic family therapy, attachment, trauma-informed practice, and adolescent development. Most importantly, they understand that every family is different and tailor their approach to what works for you.

What to Expect in Family Therapy

Getting Started

Book a free 15-minute connection call with your chosen therapist to ask any questions and make sure they’re the right fit for your family. If you’d prefer to dive straight in, you can book an initial session instead.

This first full session helps everyone get to know each other, discuss what’s bringing you to therapy, and agree on what you’d like to work towards together.

Typical Session Structure

Sessions usually last 50 minutes and involve whoever’s agreed to attend. Your therapist might work with the whole family together, split into smaller groups, or mix approaches depending on what’s most helpful.

Don’t worry if the first session feels a bit awkward. That’s completely normal. Your therapist will guide the conversation and help everyone feel comfortable sharing.

How Progress is Measured

You’ll regularly review what’s working and what you’d like to adjust. Some families need just a few sessions to get back on track, while others benefit from longer-term support. It’s entirely up to you.

Family Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

How many family members should attend? That depends on what you’re working on. Sometimes it’s helpful for everyone to be there, other times it makes sense to start with a smaller group. Your therapist will discuss this with you and can adjust who attends as therapy progresses.

What if some family members don’t want to participate? That’s really common, especially with teenagers. Family therapy can still be helpful even if not everyone attends. Your therapist can work with whoever’s willing to come and still create positive changes in family dynamics.

How long does family therapy take? Some families find a few sessions give them the tools they need, while others prefer longer-term support. There’s no fixed timeline. You’re in control of how long you continue.

Is family therapy confidential? Yes, what’s shared in sessions stays confidential. The only exceptions are if someone’s at risk of serious harm. Your therapist will explain confidentiality fully in your first session.

What’s the difference between family therapy and family mediation? Family mediation helps separating parents reach agreements about practical arrangements for children and finances. Family therapy focuses on relationships, communication, and emotional wellbeing. If you’re separating, you might benefit from both at different times.

Do we all have to be in the same room? Not necessarily. We offer online sessions where family members can join from different locations if that works better for you.

What if we’re not a traditional family? Family therapy is for all families, whatever your structure. Single parents, blended families, families with same-sex parents, kinship carers, adoptive families – you’re all welcome here.

Can we continue with the same therapist if we want individual sessions too? That depends on the situation. Your therapist will discuss what arrangement works best therapeutically.
